A former high profile radio personality and race caller has reportedly been charged with attempted murder in regional South Australia.

Adelaide's Sunday Mail newspaper says Ron Papps, who received an Order of Australia Medal in 1994 for his services to the racing industry as a commentator, appeared in Port Lincoln Magistrates Court on Friday.

A police spokesman on Sunday said "a 64-year-old man from Port Lincoln has been charged with attempted murder over an incident on January 28 and will appear in court on February 3".

According to the newspaper report, Papps was arrested after an alleged incident at his Port Lincoln home.

It said Papps became the youngest race caller in Australia at age 17 when he went to Hobart in 1962 to work for the ABC.

He also worked for Adelaide's 5DN and Melbourne's 3UZ.
